Jason 'spoiler' Solomons

Jason Solomons who was standing in for Mark Kermode on Film 24 [BBC News channel] spoiled Amazing Spider-Man #700 and he did it on purpose, the only reason he mentioned it was to give that spoiler. Fortunately I don't read that comic. He did a similar thing years back with I Love You Phillip Morris.

Screenwriter

Director
Ang Lee
Running Time
126 mins

Based on the best-selling novel by Yann Martel, is a magical adventure story centering on Pi Patel, the precocious son of a zookeeper. Dwellers in Pondicherry, India, the family decides to move to Canada, hitching a ride on a huge freighter. After a shipwreck, Pi is found adrift in the Pacific Ocean on a 26-foot lifeboat with a zebra, a hyena, an orangutan and a 450-pound Bengal tiger named Richard Parker, all fighting for survival.[Metacritic]

The lifeboat section is great but over all it's kind of disjointed and unsatisfying. The visuals are beautiful and the possible truth of the second story and how that changes the first is interesting but doesn't really work.

The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Sorcerers. Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain, first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum. Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of ingenuity and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities… A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know. (Warner Bros.)

I love the LOTR films and it was great to be back in that world, whether it's a good idea to have made this as more than one film I'm not sure. I was happy for the film to be long but less so for the pacing being so stretched but time will tell how well the whole thing works. I saw the 2D 24FPS version.

It's interesting and funny but light weight. Olga Kurylenko is only in one scene and isn't one of the psychopaths despite what the advertising suggests.

Based on true events, “Argo” chronicles the life-or-death covert operation to rescue six Americans, which unfolded behind the scenes of the Iran hostage crisis—the truth of which was unknown by the public for decades. On November 4, 1979, as the Iranian revolution reaches its boiling point, militants storm the U.S. embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. But, in the midst of the chaos, six Americans manage to slip away and find refuge in the home of the Canadian ambassador. Knowing it is only a matter of time before the six are found out and likely killed, a CIA “exfiltration” specialist named Tony Mendez comes up with a risky plan to get them safely out of the country. A plan so incredible, it could only happen in the movies. (Warner Bros.)

Tense, funny and exciting although the airport stuff becomes a little too 'Keystone cops'.

Engrossing with great performances but unfocused and sprawling in the way it tells the story. The injury of Cotillard's character was very well done.

In Skyfall, Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost. (Columbia Pictures, MGM)

A pleasant mess. It tries mixing together the old bond  style with the new post-bourne style which for me don't fit together at all. The villain was well played but reminded me of the last Star Trek villain in that his motivation was being really angry which isn't that interesting.

Pleasantly enjoyable.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower captures the dizzying highs and crushing lows of growing up. (Summit Entertainment)

Atmospheric with a delightful vitality to the whole thing. However I thought the darkest elements which had happened in the past to the characters seemed at odds with the rest and rang false.

To Rome with Love is a kaleidoscopic comedy movie set in one of the world's most enchanting cities. The film brings us into contact with a well-known American architect reliving his youth; an average middle-class Roman who suddenly finds himself Rome's biggest celebrity; a young provincial couple drawn into separate romantic encounters; and an American opera director endeavoring to put a singing mortician on stage. (Sony Pictures Classic)

I enjoyed it a lot. I couldn't quite figure out Alec Baldwin's character which seemed to change from real to symbolic with no explanation.

Running Time

Kay and Arnold are a devoted couple, but decades of marriage have left Kay wanting to spice things up and reconnect with her husband. When she hears of a renowned couple's specialist in the small town of Great Hope Springs, she attempts to persuade her skeptical husband, a steadfast man of routine, to get on a plane for a week of marriage therapy. Just convincing the stubborn Arnold to go on the retreat is hard enough – the real challenge for both of them comes as they shed their bedroom hang-ups and try to re-ignite the spark that caused them to fall for each other in the first place. (Columbia Pictures)

Funny and probably truthful but I didn't emotionally connect with the characters which made it hard to care what happened to them.

I normally don't do entries for all the Hellboy, BPRD, Lobster Johnson etc. mini series. I get them all but they're all kind of ongoings, some perhaps more so than others, but this seemed to merit special attention.

Much too stylised. I hoped I'd get used to it but never did. The director seemed more interested in this artificiality than telling an engrossing story.

Brave follows the heroic journey of Merida, a skilled archer and headstrong daughter of King Fergus and Queen Elinor. Determined to change her fate, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the unruly and uproarious lords of the land: massive, surly Lord Macintosh and cantankerous Lord Dingwall, unleashing chaos in the kingdom. When she turns to an eccentric Witch, she is granted an ill-fated wish and the ensuing peril forces Merida to harness all of her resources—including her mischievous triplet brothers—to undo a beastly curse and discover the meaning of true bravery. (Pixar)

It's fine but for a simple story it went on too long which made parts of it dull.
