While watching I thought it was trying to be a mood piece but thinking about it afterwards its a horror movie. It's more moving and haunting in retrospect than at the time maybe because it's told out of sequence so you don't know the full story until almost the end. The murder weapon seemed a curious choice, I'm not sure you'd be able to do more than wound people most of the time, maybe that's in the book but why change from what is usually used.
