The Five Year Engagement

Cast
Emily Blunt
Jason Segel
Chris Pratt
Alison Brie
Screenwriters
Jason Segel
Nicholas Stoller
Director
Nicholas Stoller
Running Time
124 minutes

Beginning where most romantic comedies end, The Five-Year Engagement looks at what happens when an engaged couple keeps getting tripped up on the long walk down the aisle. (Universal Pictures)

It was OK but there was too much of the supporting cast doing their comedy turns which was over obvious, not always funny, didn't really move along the story and padded the movie out far longer than it needed to be.

Denmark, 1760s. German doctor Johann Struensee (Mikkelsen) is taken on to attend to the questionable sanity of the erratic King Christian. The German's eye is quickly caught by the king's beautiful wife, Queen Caroline (Vikander), and the two fall into an affair that threatens to consume them both.[Empire]

An engrossing, well told story although I would like to have seen how the peasants were viewing events.

September Comics

CBR has the new DC, Dark Horse, Marvel and Image solicitations for September.

This is the stuff I'm thinking about in addition to my regular pull list.

GHOST #0
Kelly Sue DeConnick (W), Phil Noto (A), and Jenny Frison (Cover)
On sale Sept 19
FC, 32 pages
$2.99
Miniseries
Former journalist Vaughn Barnes has been reduced to moonlighting as cameraman for the shoddy paranormal-investigation cable TV show Phantom Finders. But when a curious device summons the specter of a beautiful, translucent woman, Vaughn is plunged into a mystery of criminal intrigue that spans two worlds! Kelly Sue DeConnick and Phil Noto launch their exciting new take on one of Dark Horse’s most popular characters ever!
• Kelly Sue DeConnick (Captain Marvel) brings a keen new eye to the spectral heroine.
• Renowned artist Phil Noto (Angel & Faith, X-23) perfectly captures the wraithlike elegance of the enigma known as Ghost!

Got this first time around plus Noto's art is great.

ASTONISHING X-MEN #54
Marjorie Liu (W) • Mike Perkins (A)
Cover by PHIL NOTO
• Susan Hatchi reveals her connection to the X-Men, and why she’s so intent on their destruction.
• How long can the X-Men survive in her prison, even without the nanobombs circulating through their bloodstream?
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$2.99

If this is $2.99 I'll get this but it wasn't last month so it might be an error. I enjoyed  Marjorie Liu's writing on X23.

Running Time

Snow White and the Huntsman is a new take on the classic fairy tale which features an expanded role for the Huntsman. In the fairy tale, he is ordered to take Snow White into the woods and kill her, but instead lets her go. In the new take, the Huntsman is not a love interest but acts more as a mentor, teaching Snow White to fight and survive. (Universal Pictures)

A lot of the imagery was too reminiscent of other films like the Stag from Princess Mononoke but it was well done although it didn't hold my attention fully because it was always obvious what was going to happen especially towards the end.

Screenwriters

Filmmaker Ridley Scott returns to the genre he helped define, creating an original science fiction epic set in the most dangerous corners of the universe. The film takes a team of scientists and explorers on a thrilling journey that will test their physical and mental limits and strand them on a distant world, where they will discover the answers to our most profound questions and to life's ultimate mystery. (20th Century Fox)

Extraordinarily beautiful visuals which worked well with the 3D which I was conscious of less and less as it went on. It takes a while for the story to get going which is fine but the character development that normally allows for didn't really happen. Once the series of horrors starts however it was great. I wish they hadn't shown what happens to the alien ship in the trailer.
